Amenorrhea

Amenorrhea is when a female temporarily or permanently doesn’t get her period. Amenorrhea can be a late period that happens once or can be when a female doesn’t get her period long-term which can be a sign that she may have an underlying medical issue.

It is normal for women to experience amenorrhea due to pregnancy or menopause. Other common causes of Amenorrhea can be:

·       Hormone disruption

·       Stress

·       Weight loss

·       Reproductive disorders

The main symptom of Amenorrhea is the absence of a period but depending on the reason for your period being absent you may experience other symptoms such as:

·      Acne

·      Pelvic pain

·      Headache

·      Hair loss

·      Change in vision

Amenorrhea can occur in a woman’s body naturally and because of medications or because of life changes. Amenorrhea occurs naturally in a woman’s body when she is pregnant, experiencing menopause, or when is breastfeeding. Medications such as birth control can cause a woman to miss her period due to it being irregular, but it also can cause a woman to not have her period at all.

Other reasons women may experience amenorrhea:

·      Stress

·      Low body weight

·      Hormonal imbalance

·      Lack of reproductive organs

In-conclusion:

According to the National Library of Medicine, Amenorrhea is not life-threatening and, in the US, only 1% of women are affected by amenorrhea. At Stetho Health Systems we want to educate menstruating women on conditions that can occur to their bodies that they may not know about or have very little education on the topic. Though amenorrhea affects a few women it is still important to be educated on the topic as it may occur to you or someone you may know.
