Uterine Fibroids

Uterine fibroids are “muscular tumors that grow in the wall of the uterus” according to Womenshealth.gov. These tumors are noncancerous but can affect the lives of women who do experience symptoms. Not every woman with fibroids will experience symptoms but those that do can experience symptoms such as:

· Heavy bleeding

· Lower back pain

· Frequent urination

· Reproductive issues

· Bloating in the lower stomach area

· Constipation

· Vaginal discharge

Cause of uterine fibroids:

What causes uterine fibroids? The answer is hormones. Uterine fibroids are found to be controlled by estrogen and progesterone. When a woman’s estrogen and progesterone levels are high uterine fibroids grow bigger and when there isn’t a high amount of both hormones the fibroids will shrink in size. After ovulation, a woman’s estrogen and progesterone levels are at their peak and that is typically when she will experience enlarged fibroids.

How will I know if I have uterine fibroids?

If you have any of the above symptoms and believe that you may have uterine fibroids contact your doctor for a correct diagnosis. It is recommended that a woman should get a pelvic exam starting at the age of 21 or when she is experiencing symptoms that cause pelvic exams such as symptoms of uterine fibroids. Often, a woman’s doctor can feel fibroids in the uterus during a pelvic exam. Other tests that can be done to see if a woman has uterine fibroids may be:

· Ultrasound

· X-Ray

· MRI

· Cat Scan

How to treat uterine fibroids:

Uterine fibroids can be treated with medication or surgery depending on the severity of the fibroids. Women that have fibroids but experience no symptoms may not need treatment but will need to have regular exams to monitor the growth of the fibroids.

When a doctor determines whether a woman needs treatment he or she will keep in mind, how severe the patient’s symptoms are, future pregnancy, the size of the fibroids, where the fibroids are located, and the age of the patient before putting together a treatment plan.

In-Conclusion:

At Stetho Health Systems we want to educate women around the world about conditions that may be living with every day and have no idea that they are. Uterine fibroid is a condition that many women live with every day and experience no symptoms. Though uterine fibroids are noncancerous, and most women experience no symptoms some women are affected by these fibroids which can make a life for them rough. If you believe you may have uterine fibroids, consult your doctor for answers.
